Nokia Surprises with Trio of Android Xs

There has been plenty of rumour and evidence lately pointing to the launch of a Nokia handset running Android, and as expected that device has been unveiled this week. However less expectedly it’s one of a trio of smartphones running Android called the X, X+ and XL. Rather than being a hasty attempt to rush out devices running Google’s OS the triple X lineup looks to be a carefully planned move to provide a gateway to Nokia’s better spec’d Windows Phones. Lumia 1320 Landing in UK Feb 24

Despite being launched back in October 2013 and available in other countries for a while it has taken Nokia’s latest phablet, the 1320, quite a while to reach the UK. But now Nokia has blessed the affordable device with a release date, confirming that it will in fact be arriving on our shores Feb 24. That’s only a week away and pre-orders have already begun. Nokia Gets Ready to Unveil Android-Powered Normandy

It’s looking more and more like Nokia’s long-rumoured Android handset, known as the Normandy, will be surfacing soon as the Wall Street Journal has it on good authority that Nokia plans to release the device. More than that it has said that Nokia plans to unveil it at the Mobile World Congress later this month, doing an Indy and rescuing the handset from the land of mobile curiosities before the stone door that is its deal with Microsoft closes. Long Rumoured Nokia Normandy Lands on Twitter Again

Back in November images hit the web of a Nokia handset that was rumoured to be a prototype version of a Lumia device running Android. It looked like every other Lumia device out there, not a criticism, with the exception of its back button indicating it was an Android rather than a Windows Phone device. Now another image has leaked, seemingly showing the same device, which could be an indicator that Nokia is still working on the handset. (more…)

It appears that determination is paying off according to a recent report which indicates that the platform is now more popular than iOS in Italy and that one in ten smartphones in major European countries are Windows Phones. Nokia Lumia Tablet Finally a Reality

A Lumia tablet running Windows has been rumoured for years but last week it finally became a reality as Nokia took the covers off the Lumia 2520 at its Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi. The event was one last hurrah for the Finnish company before Microsoft’s acquisition of it is complete and though the arrival of the tablet is very welcome it’s not exactly surprising. (more…)

Scientists prove it’s Possible to Charge a Phone with a Lightning Bolt

In the future when people are desperate to charge their phone and can’t find an outlet, or have forgotten their charger, they may be praying to get hit by lightning. Scientists at the University of Southampton, working with Nokia, have proven that it’s possible to charge a smartphone with a lightning bolt. But it’s definitely not recommended. (more…)

UK can snap up Lumia 1020 soon

It’s been available in the US for a while now but the star of Nokia’s Lumia line, the 41mp camera endowed 1020, is soon to be arriving in the UK. It has been confirmed that the handset is going to go on sale September 25 and if you want to get one unlocked it looks like it’s going to cost between £550 and £600. (more…)

Thanks to well-informed rumour mongers, the behavioural patterns of major manufacturers and OS-patriotic consumers the world of smartphones is an exciting but predictable place. So there weren’t too many gasps when Microsoft recently purchased Nokia for a cool $7.2bn. The negative reaction also didn’t come as much of a surprise. Nokia Lights Up Phabletville with a New Lumia

When Nokia announced earlier this week that it was planning on revealing something big many thought that it had a tablet lurking up its Finnish sleeves. However the mystery device soon got its big unveiling and it turned out to be a phablet, the Lumia 625. The handset is a larger version of Nokia’s 3.8” Lumia 620 which was released last year, this new device is packing a 4.7” display. (more…)
