This Christmas there’s going to be a showdown in the gadget world, and it’s going to be between three budget tablets. The Nexus 7, the Kindle Fire HD and as of last week a third – Acer’s Iconia Tab A110. Each of them offers more or less the same specs and for more or less the same price, but which one will win? The devil is in the details but while those slight differences may make all the difference it also may just come down to the pure clout of the names of the Nexus and Amazon brands. (more…)

Kindle Fire HD looks set to burn iPad and Nexus 7 in UK

It’s taken its sweet time to reach the UK but next month will finally see the Kindle Fire brand reach the the shores of Great Britain in the form of the original Kindle Fire and the new and improved version, the Kindle Fire HD. Few tablets aside from Amazon’s have even managed to come close to giving the iPad anything to worry about and the launch of the new and improved device, and its release in the UK, could be another chink in Apple’s armour. Wii UAt the E3 expo in June, the one thing everyone was excited about is Wii U, Nintendo’s upcoming update to their popular console. What makes the Wii U so different from past incarnations is that it comes with a new controller called the Gamepad. But this isn’t any old controller, it’s a second screen that lets the player see a personalised view that can’t be seen on the TV. Dollar and Pound next to one anotherEver noticed how when an American gadget manufacturer launches a new product, they seem to use a different exchange rate from the rest of the world by the time the product reaches good old blighty? And no, you’re not getting a better deal! It always favours the yank supplier. The product might appear to be cheaper in the UK once it’s been converted to pounds sterling, but if you do the figures, you might be in for a shock. After all, at $1 = 60 – 65p, there’s 35 – 40% difference between the value of sterling compared to the US dollar. (more…)
