2DS or not 2DS, is there a point?

Some thought it was an April Fools prank, but then they checked the calendar and it wasn’t April. No, Nintendo was serious when it announced the 2DS. When the news broke it was met with many a raised eyebrow, a reaction caused by confusion from the device’s name, form factor and general purpose. As the name implies the 2DS is a 2D version of the 3DS, ditching the handheld’s key feature and dropping the foldable form factor which has distinguished the DS range for almost ten years now. Nintendo rethinks 3D for future consoles

When Nintendo released the 3DS it seemed like 3D was the way forward though it’s clearly not been the Wiimote-style leap that the company was hoping for. It has now been officially said that the eye-popping tech won’t be a big feature of future consoles. The news comes from an interview with Nintendo head honcho Satoru Iwata where he’s commented on the lack of interest in the 3D display technology that led to the big price reduction of the console. While those devices are still very much alive and kicking the latest generation of handheld consoles have been born into tough times and there’s little doubt that they’re not quite as popular as they once were. Is It Game Over For The Nintendo 3DS?

The company has now taken the drastic step of reducing the price of the device. In the states, the machine will command a RRP of just $170 – a huge drop from its initial release price of $250. In fact, the price cut has even prompted Nintendo chief, Satoru Iwata, to issue an apology to early purchasers. Never before has the game manufacturer had to discount a device so early after its release. (more…)

Nintendo 3DS – Most Pre-ordered Console Of All Time

Despite recent health warnings that overuse by children under six could affect eyesight development, the device managed to sell 375,000 units in its first week alone in Japan. And, most of these sales took place within the first hour of the world’s first 3D handheld gaming console going on sale.

By the looks of pre-orders in the UK, the same is set to happen here this week. It is already the most pre-ordered console of all time on Amazon, far overtaking the PS3 back in 2007.

Sony’s latest version of the PSP, currently codenamed the NGP (Next Generation Portable), is already straining at the leash, as the final touches are added in preparation for a showdown with Nintendo’s groundbreaking 3DS.

An increasing number of people are using their portable gadgets to surf the internet when out and about.

According to recent research from 3 Mobile, we’re rarely putting our bits of tech down – instead opting to access the internet at almost every opportunity!

The mobile telecoms provider surveyed 3,000 people and results showed that almost 75% of us use devices such as handheld games consoles, music players and tablets to access the web when in the comfort of our own lounge or bedroom.
